Geography
Geography really is the study of the world around us. Our curriculum offers students the chance to study the issues that will shape their present and future lives. Across all years, students study a varied mix of human and physical topics. They learn about contemporary issues like globalisation, development and sustainability as well as core knowledge and understanding of how rivers, coasts and plate tectonics impact on the human environment.
Geography at Annan offers students the opportunity to learn geographical skills such as map reading, measuring weather and climate data, fieldwork, as well as utilising and applying statistical skills. Through these means, students are encouraged to enquire about the world around them, always asking questions and building up resilience to become more independent, successful learners and excellent Geographers.

History
At Annan academy our schemes of learning will follow the enquiry based learning model where students will have the opportunity to question the past, form their own interpretations about it and become independent historians. The development of historical skills is at the heart of everything we do in order to equip students for National courses and beyond.
Topics include: The Origins of the First World War, Peacekeeping and the League of Nations, Hitler's Foreign Policy, Hitler's Germany, and much more...
Modern Studies
The Social Subjects Faculty at Annan Academy delivers: Geography, History, Modern Studies and Religious, Moral and Philosophical Studies (RMPS) from S1 to S6. Social Subjects and RMPS play an important role in the new curriculum, preparing students to be active and informed participates in their local, national and global community. In the Social Subjects and RMPS students develop an understanding of the world by learning about other people and their values, in different times, places and circumstances. They also develop an understanding of the natural environment and how it has been shaped. Contexts from Scotland to global are used for learning, while there is a growing emphasis on the historical, social, geographical, economic and political changes that have affected Scotland. Students learn about change in society, about conflict and about environmental issues. With greater understanding comes the opportunity and ability to influence events by exercising informed and responsible citizenship.
Religious Education
Within the Social Subjects Faculty, Religious Education is an integral part to our pupils' overall understanding and appreciation to faiths and beliefs. We have recently changed our teaching to enquiry based lessons; to encourage and nurture our pupils' skills of relfection, investigation and to cultivate answers to life's big questions.
During their lesson time S1 to S3, pupils gain knowledge about different religious faiths as well as developing their own perspectives. In S4 to S6, our pupils expand their subject knowledge further to consider how religious beliefs may impact on daily life.
We aim that all pupils by the end of their school life at Annan Academy to have cultivated their own beliefs and opinions towards world issues, and a recognition of religious tolerance. We hope that all pupils will become positive members of society.
